Oriental Rugs
Dress your floors with style. Nothing warms a room more than an authentic oriental rug with its beautiful hues and designs. Today's market can reproduce hand made rugs with modern machinery to look as though they are oriental rugs. However, with modern machinery you go back to the concerns that 'green design' promoters warn about; recycled plastics and synthetic materials with glues that harm your "indoor air quality." Nothing replaces the “art” of an authentic one-of-a-kind "hand-knotted" oriental rug you personally selected. An oriental rug creates memories that provide a link to people and homes your family cherish.
Here are some pictures of the oriental rugs in stock and available. If you don't see what you're looking for contact us and let us know your desired color, design, and size. Oriental Rug Terms
Authenticity - To avoid rugs that might be sold illegally as Persian, ask for a a Certificate of Authenticity. This will validate the origin, style, materials, size, age, condition, kpsi, and estimated retail value for Insurance purposes.
Foundation - An interlaced combination of warp and wefts in the rug's body.
Imperfections - It is often said that Persian rugs are ‘perfectly imperfect’. Slight inconsistencies are the proof that a rug was not made by machine. Even if a rug is coming out perfectly, the weaver will usually make an intentional mistake, in line with the belief that only the Supreme Being can make something that is perfect.
KPSI - Knots per square inch is a good indication of the quality and value of a fine carpet, the higher the number the better the rug. It takes experienced fingers to make that many very small knots.
Loom - A frame or machine for interlacing at right angles two or more sets of threads or yarns to form a rug.
Materials - Natural materials, such as wool, cotton and silk have much greater durability than synthetics. They will never release chemical gases, as most synthetics eventually do, and are also innocent of other environmental concerns, like causing allergies, pollution, etc.
Pile - The surface of a rug composed of an infinite number of loops of warp threads, or else of an infinite number of free ends of either warp or of weft, or filling, threads that stand erect from the foundation. In a looped pile rug the loops are uncut; in a cut pile rug the same or similar loops are cut, either in the loom during weaving or by a special shearing tool.
Price - The price should be reasonable for the quality you are receiving. Until recently, a handmade area rug could be marked up many times, sometimes quite unreasonably, as it traveled from dealer to dealer. Prices should vary according to labor, materials, quality, place of origin, style, kpsi, and rarity of design.
Selvedge - The edge on either side of a woven rug so finished as to prevent raveling.
Warp - A series of yarns extended lengthwise in a loom and crossed by the weft.
Weave - To make a rug on a loom by interlacing warp and weft threads.
Weft - Also called filling, in woven rugs, the widthwise, or horizontal, yarns carried over and under the warp, or lengthwise, yarns and running from selvage to selvage. Filling yarns are generally made with less twist than are warp yarns because they are subjected to less strain in the rug weaving process and therefore require less strength.
